There has to be something seriously wrong with Phil Mickelson. One week he is up and the next week his game is in the toilet. You never would have thought he would miss the cut at the Players championship, but that is exactly what is going to happen, if things stay the way they are .
The projected cut is even par, and Mickelson is at plus 1. This is not the Mickelson we have grown to love over the years. Is Mickelson running out of competitive rounds of golf? Last week he had a chance to win and this week he is going to miss the cut in what could be considered the fifth major.
Phil started out at the Players with a round of 72. Ordinarily, you wouldn’t think that is too bad, but when guys like Woods and Garcia are out on the course posting scores of 5 under, Mickelson is being buried.
Phil posted a second round of 1 over par 73 today. he had to know, it wasn’t going to be good enough to keep him around for the weekend. he only made 3 birdies in his second round while making 4 bogies.
We could blame the double he made on 14 yesterday, but that would be making an excuse for Phil’s inexcusable play this season. Something has to be bothering Mickelson. The warrior we’ve seen on the golf course in previous years doesn’t exist this season.
It could be his physical condition. His arthritis could be bothering him more so than he is letting on. What ever it is, we can only hope, Phil can gather himself and give us at least one more season of competitive golf.
