Sloane Stephens was the only American left at Wimbledon with a chance to move onto the semis. That was until Stephens was defeated by Marion Bartoli of France. You may recall Stephens beat Serena Williams in Australia, so she had the fire power to move on at Wimbledon.

Stephens was the last hope for the American’s. She was defeated by Bartoli, 6-4, 7-5 in a rain-interrupted, break-filled match. Maybe the stop and go play was enough to take Stephens out of her game.

Stephens was the lady that made some comments about Williams behavior in the past. Recently she just said that Williams wouldn’t even talk to her after she defeated her in their match in Australia.

Well, before the match started today at Wimbledon, Serena Williams gave Stephens her blessing. It still wasn’t enough for the American to move on at Wimbledon.

The match was interrupted by a a 2 1/2-hour rain delay. That could have been enough to take Stephens out of her game. it is hard for an athlete to heat up and cool down and then heat up again. Especially when the delay is 2-1/2 hours long.

Bartoli was leading when the rains came 5-4. Stephens still tried to battle back but fell short in her attempt to make it into the finals. After Stephens broke to get within 5-4, then held to 5-all, Bartoli took the last two games, including yet another break at love to end the quarterfinal.
