Phil Mickelson played a fantastic round of golf today at the Wells Fargo Championship. Mickelson shot a 3rd round of 63 to take the lead into the club house. Phil hasn’t played this well in a long time. He has suffered this season with back problems and even missed the cut at the Masters.
This is the second round in the 60′s for Phil this week. It’s safe to say he likes Quail Hollow. He opened with a round of 67 then shot a 3 over par round of 75 for his second. He then came out today and played the kind of golf that the Mickelson of old would play.
He made 4 birdies in a row then made an eagle at the par 5 7th. He then birdied the 8th and pared the 9th to go out with a 29. People had to be thinking this was the day Mickelson would shot a 59, the way he was playing.
Phil settled down on the back 9 making only 2 birdies, but he didn’t have a bogey on his card in round 3. He is back to the Mickelson form people were waiting for. Just in time before the Players championship and then the US open.
If Phil wants to win this Wells Fargo Championship, he is going to have to take it low again on Sunday. JB Holmes was tied with Mickelson at 11 under par through 11 holes at the time of this article. Nevertheless it was great watching Mickelson work his magic around the course today.
