Phil Mickelson may have had a bad case of jet lag when he started his first round of the World Golf Championships at Firestone today. Mickelson couldn’t make a move on the leaders in his first round.
He had trouble trying to make birdies in round one. He didn’t have too much trouble finding bogies. he made 5 of them in his first round. He only made 3 birdies and is now trailing the leader by 8 shots.
Mickelson has a chance to chase down Tiger Woods for the World’s number one. If Phil doesn’t play better in round 2 he may not be able to make a move on Woods. Mickelson may have left the magic he had wining the British open over seas.
People were expecting a lot out of Mickelson this week. Phil was the hottest player in the world for the 2 weeks that he was in Europe. He has to dig deep if he is going to pass Woods in the World Golf rankings.
Mickelson has the game, he just needs to keep his head and play the same type of golf he was playing in Europe. If he can do that, he can win the top spot. If he can’t keep his head on straight he is going to have to trouble in this tournament and the next major.
