There has been too much focus on paying taxes and not enough focus on playing golf for Phil Mickelson lately. Mickelson finished his first round at Torrey Pines at even par, he is already 7 shots off the lead and in a tie for 90th place. Sure you can say it was the first round but Torrey Pines is a course Mickelson knows very well. Phil shot a 1 over par 37 on his front nine making a bogey on number 4 & 6 and he birded number 8. On his back nine Phil played his typical Michelson golf, he had 2 bogies and 3 birdies to finish his day at even par.

There has been far too much focus on the taxes Phil has to pay and not enough focus on playing golf. Mickelson has to make a move in the second round if he expects to be around to play on the weekend. Mickelson knows Torrey Pines well, he lives in California and I’m sure he played the course a lot growing up as a kid. One thing we have come to expect over the years with Mickelson is an up and down round. The problem is the leaders are pulling away from Phil after round one and he has to play better to catch up to them.

Phil is never going to play any better. He needs to go play with the senior golfers and let them beat him. He is all washed up and he needs to call it quits and go home and pay his taxes.
