Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos couldn’t take advantage of a 24 point half time lead. They would lose to the New England Patriots in overtime because of a stupid mistake made by one of the Broncos on special teams.
The game shouldn’t have been lost. The Broncos defense couldn’t stop the Patriots from launching a 24 point comeback in the second half and the Broncos offense, even with the great Peyton Manning, couldn’t score a point in the 3rd quarter.
The Broncos defense let the Patriots score 21 unanswered points in the 3rd quarter. The Broncos would watch Brady lead a comeback that would give them a shot to win forcing the game to go in overtime.
In the 30 minutes of football played in the second half, the Broncos not only lost the lead, they could only find the end zone once to put up 7 points and the game was tied at 31 sending it into overtime.
The Broncos had the ball first and Manning couldn’t get his team into the end zone. New England took over after a punt and the Broncos defense held them.
Then the unthinkable happened. The Patriots would pun the ball back to the Broncos, Wes Welker was waving the ball off when it hit one of his teammates making it a live ball. New England would recover it and run a couple of plays to run some time off the clock before kicking a field goal to beat Denver.
The Broncos should have never put themselves in a position to lose this game. They had a 24 point lead and the Denver defense did nothing to stop Brady in the second half of the game.
Not only did the Broncos miss a chance to beat the Patriots, they missed a chance to capitalize by pulling ahead of the Chiefs who lost yesterday.
You could see the discuss in Manning’s face when New England recovered the punt in overtime.
