WHAT THE F&#$ WAS HE THINKING?? WHY WAS HE TRYING TO GO FOR IT ALL IN THE EIGHTH INNING BY TAKING HIS MOST RELIABLE HITTER OUT OF THE LINEUP IN EXHANGE FOR THE THREADBARE POSSIBILITY THAT HIS PINCH RUNNER MIGHT WIND UP AT SECOND BASE AND THEN SCORE ON A SINGLE WHEN THE CARDINALS’ PITCHER WAS THROWING AS WELL AS HE WAS? HOW LIKELY WAS IT THAT DEE GORDON (WHO WAS PROMPTLY THROWN OUT ON A FIELDER’S CHOICE) WAS GOING TO WIN THE GAME RIGHT THEN AND THERE FOR THE DODGERS SINCE THE CARDINALS—THE LEAGUE’S (AND PERHAPS THE MAJORS’) BEST HITTING TEAM—HAD AT LEAST ONE MORE AT-BAT COMING TO THEM?

IN  BASEBALL (AS IN LIFE), YOU HAVE TO WEIGH WHAT YOU STAND TO GAIN AGAINST WHAT YOU STAND TO LOSE. IN THIS CASE GONZALEZ’ SPOT CAME UP TWO MORE TIMES IN EXTRA INNINGS AND DUE TO DONNIE BALLGAME’S IMPETUOUSNESS AND STUPDITY THE DODGERS COULDN’T COME UP WITH A REJOINER FOR THE CARDINALS’ PITCHERS. IT ALSO REVIVED SKEPTICISM ABOUT MATTINGLY’S DECISION MAKING ABILITY (NOT THAT IT EVER REALLY DIED)—NOT TO MENTION HIS VIABILITY AS THE DODGERS’ MANAGER BEYOND THIS SEASON.
