You know we are getting closer to the NFL draft when the Combine begins. Well folks, here we go. this year there may or may not be franchise quarterbacks available in the 1st round of the NFL draft. it is going to be very difficult to pass up last years draft class when it comes to taking snaps from center. Matt Barkley isn’t even going to be throwing the football at this combine. Can you imagine trying to scout a quarterback who can’t throw the football? How much is his stock going to plummet? Could Barkley fall out of the first round of the 2013 draft? He was supposed to be the best quarterback in this draft class. Now thanks to a shoulder injury he suffered, the NFL scouts who are in need of a starting quarterback will have to schedule time to see him throw in a month.
As far as Geno Smith goes, he could indeed be a first round pick, but will he be worth the first overall pick in the draft? Smith threw for over 4,000 yards last season, those are the kind of numbers that should light up some eyes in the NFL. Smith completed 369 passes for 4,205 yards to be exact. he had a 71.2 completion average. While Smith can run he didn’t do much of that in West Virgina, in 2012 he only had 66 rushes for a total of 151 yards. You can’t really compare him to a Robert Griffin III.
It is going to be interesting to see if there is a NFL team that is willing to use a number one pick on either one of these two quarterbacks. With Barkley not throwing he might even fallout of the first round all together. We will see what happens come April 25th.
