Justin Verlander turned in a great performance to beat the Toronto Blue Jays. He hasn’t been the same Verlander we’ve seen in years past this season. Some thought it could have been the big contract extension the Tigers gave him before the season started.
People were left wondering if Verlander was another case of a guy getting paid and then not performing to the level that got him to the top money. Verlander has suffered this season, even though he has 9 wins this season he hasn’t been able to dominate hitters like he did in past seasons.
Justin Verlander threw a good game and he held the Blue Jays to only three hits all singles. “He threw exceptionally well,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland said “He looked like he was in command the whole game.”
That is something the Tigers manager hasn’t been able to say much this season about Verlander. The guy has struggle to stay in control in most of his outings this season. Verlaander is a guy who usually gets stronger as the game goes on.
Yesterday he was able to do that for the first time since early June. Now the question becomes if he will be able to repeat that kind of performance in the second half of the season. The Tigers are going to need him to perform at that kind of level as they get closer to post season play.
It may be too early to say Justin Verlander is back.
