Phil Mickelson may still have a few wins within his aging grasps, when you think he is fading away into the age where you just idle until your 50th Birthday comes so you can go onto the senior tour, you see a round out of Phil that says not so fast. At 42-years-old Mickleson proved today at The Crooked Stick Golf Club he could still hang with the youngsters on the PGA Tour.

Mickelson needed to mount a charge and he went out and did it. He put together a front nine he could be proud of going out in 32 and continued to contend for the top of the leader board as he played the back nine. Mickelson made 5 birdies and 1 bogey on the front nine in the BMW Championship and he continued playing well into his back nine. Phil would birdie the par five 11th, and then in typical Mickelson fashion bogeyed the 14th after making birdie on 13. Mickelson would get that dropped stroke right back on the 15th with another birdie.

Mickelson was only 2 strokes back behind Vijay Singh for the lead after Phil pared the 16th finding himself at 14 under par with 2 holes left to play in his third round. Mickelson went to the 17th tee and pulled a 6 iron out for the 196 yard par 3, he hit it within about 8 feet and made a birdie to get to 15 under par with one hole left to play. Mickelson has made the biggest move on the leader board today.

Phil went to the 18th tee and busted a huge drive that found the left center of the fairway. It was a perfect drive giving him a chance to knock an iron close for yet another birdie in the round he has already made nine of them in. Phil had the look we haven’t seen in a while in his eyes. Phil had 158 yards left to the green and hit an 8 iron that just came up about 6 inches off the green and pin high, he had that left for what would be his 10th birdie of the day…

Mickelson would do it, he made his 10th birdie of the day shooting a 64 , 10 birdies and 2 bogeys shows Mikelson still has that fire to win burning inside….You have to go back years to think of a Mickelson round that was this good…
