Quarterback Joe Flacco is finding out the hard way, how difficult it is to repeat as a super bowl champion. If last nights start of the 2013 NFL season is any sign of things to come, the Ravens are in for a long bumpy ride this season.

The team was disgraced by the Denver Broncos. The Ravens defense gave up 7 touchdown passes to the Broncos led by none other than Peyton Manning. Joe Flacco had no answers for the Broncos in the 2nd half of the game.

Flacco only had 2 touchdowns in the game and he threw 2 interceptions. He hardly looked like a guy that deserved the 120 million dollar contract Ozzie Newsome and the Ravens put together for him in the off season.

His performance in the second half stunk. What was worse was the performance of the Ravens defense in the second half. They looked terrible and they couldn’t believe it themselves. The defense that won a super bowl just 6 months ago gave up 35 second half points.

Maybe they can’t compete without their emotional leader Ray Lewis. This is their first regular season game without the man who inspired this Ravens defense for 17 years. There were times in the game when Terrell Suggs tried to inspire the Ravens defense the way that Lewis used to do it, but he couldn’t get the job done.

The Ravens better find a defense that can stop a team from scoring 35 points in the second half of a game. Otherwise it is going to be a disappointing follow up season to a super bowl win.
