Before yesterday, Michael Sam was a top NFL draft prospect. Now that he has come out and told the world he is an openly gay man and proud of it, you have to wonder if he is still a top NFL draft prospect.
Sam doesn’t think it should make any difference that he is gay. He said he is a player that can help an NFL team win football games. How do you think the NFL will handle the news of drafting their first openly gay player?
Which NFL team would take the chance of having this distraction in their locker room. What if the team that drafts Sam has a player on their roster like Richie Incognito?
Will there be bullying in the locker room. Are the other players on the teams roster ready to play with an openly gay man on their team?
There is a lot of questions surrounding the news that Sam let out of the closet yesterday. He is the first openly gay player to come out before the NFL draft.
The so called experts are already saying his draft stock will plummet. Is this fair? No, it isn’t but the NFL may not be ready for this kind of distraction on a team.
Sam was a star player at the University of Missouri and it took a lot of guts to come out and profess that he is an openly gay man. Sam said he told his teammates in Missouri he was gay in August and suffered no repercussions.
In an ESPN interview Sam said; “I understand how big this is.” “It’s a big deal. No one has done this before. And it’s kind of a nervous process, but I know what I want to be … I want to be a football player in the NFL.”
In a CBS poll Sam was listed at number 90 in top draft prospects heading into the 2014 NFL draft. It will be interesting to see where he is picked come draft day.
