In typical Phil Mickelson style, he won the Scottish Open after he tried to lose it on the 18th and final green in regulation. Mickelson, made a bogey in regulation by 3 putting the par 5 and making a bogey to for a sudden death play off.

Phil played some smart golf on the last hole. He hit his third shot pin high and just over-charged the birdie putt. He left the ball about 6 feet past the hole and missed the come-backer for the par. He made the bogey and was forced to win the Scottish Open on the first play-off hole.

Mickelson drove the ball in the fairway and then hit his second shot short of the green. It typical Phil Mickelson style he hit one of the best wedge shots I have ever seen him hit and he almost hole it. He left the ball within inches of the hole and was able to make a tap in to beat South African Branden Grace and take the Scottish Open.

Phil hasn’t won on European soil in a long time. He went over to play the Scottish Open as a tune up for the up-coming British Open. Phil did more than just get a tune up. He won on a lynx style golf course and should be a great shape going into nest weeks open championship.

If Phil can play the same kind of golf in the British open that he played this week, he could be a contender next week. Mickelson fought the urge all week to pull off improbable shots and played some darn smart golf.

That is something we don’t see from Mickelson very often. He must really want to add another major championship to his career. A British Open would mean the world to Phil….
