The last thing Danica Patrick needed to see this afternoon at the Daytona Speedway was the 12 car crash that took place on the final lap of the Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway. The accident that took place included 12 cars and at least 28 NASCAR fans were injured when the debris flew threw the catch fence and into where spectators were watching the race. It was the catch fence that claimed the life of Patrick’s fellow Indy car driver Dan Wheldon after he was caught up in a 15 car pile up at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Danica took Wheldon’s death rough, they were not only fellow drivers, they were friends.
After seeing what happened at Daytona today, with just a few hours before the first women ever starts the Daytona 500 from the pole position, you just have to wonder what is going threw Patrick’s mind. It wasn’t that long ago when Wheldon lost his life and that is something that has to be etched into Patrick’s mind.
Unlike today’s wreck at Daytona which took place on the last lap of the race, the one that claimed Wheldon’s life was only minutes old. When we look back at that wreck on the eve of Danica’s history making start at Daytona, we have to recall what she said on the day she watched as Dan Wheldon crashed his Indy car. “It was like a movie scene which they try to make as gnarly as possible,” said Danica Patrick, making her final IndyCar start. “It was debris everywhere across the whole track. You could smell the smoke. You could see the billowing smoke on the back straight from the car. There was a chunk of fire that we were driving around. You could see cars scattered.”
That would be Danica’s last start in a Indy car before making her transition into NASCAR. You have to wonder if she was thinking about the crash that took Dan Wheldon’s life today as she watched a car bounce off the fence. Thanks GOD no drivers were seriously injured. Our prayers continue to go out to the injured fans….
