Davis Love III, the man who has won, 5 times at the Heritage, is finding he and NFL quarterback Peyton Manning have something in common. Love III is about 14 months removed from neck surgery, and he is trying to fight his way back into contention, on the PGA Tour.
Love III would like nothing better, than to find a win that would vault him into the Masters. He would love to have a crack at the one tournament, he wants a win at more than any other he has played in. Today, in his first round at the RBC Heritage, Love had plenty of opportunity.
He was striking the ball as well as I have seen him do it, in a long time. He was attacking pins and he was giving himself birdie opportunities. The problem was his putts weren’t finding the bottom of the hole when they should have. Davis was making pars. On the back side he made plenty of pars.
He pared 8 of the 9 holes on his back nine, and that almost drove him crazy. He knows he left more than a couple on the course, and he knows he has to get his putter under control if he is going to find his 6th plaid jacket come Sunday, (7 if you count his jr win).
Love also knows coming back to the tour with a surgically repaired neck isn’t something to take lightly. He knows there is still plenty of work to do, to make himself stronger and he knows if NFL QB Peyton Manning can do it so can he. In a post round interview with Love III, he told me “at least no one is tackling me”.
He is right. No one is hitting him. On the golf course Davis Love III does all the hitting. And from what I could see following him for 10 holes today, he is hitting very well. He has to find some more confidence in his putting stroke, and if he can before the weekend, he will be in contention come Sunday.
The RBC and Harbour Town Golf Links hold a special place in his heart, and one more win there, would be special and every one of the fans who were cheering him on today knows it. Lets hope tomorrow brings a better putting day to the man who left at least 4 birdies on the back nine on the table today.
