In a game that would become a pitching duel for 9 innings the Reds second baseman handed the Houston Astros the win. The Reds were one out away from sending the game into extra innings and the Astros hit a ground ball that any little league player could have handled. The hit was as normal as they come. It didn’t take any bad hops and it wasn’t as if it was a rocket blast either. Wilson Valdez just didn’t get his glove down to the ground and watched as the ball would roll right in-between his legs into right center field to allow the Houston Astros to score a run in their last at bat to win the game 2-1 over the Reds.
This one has to go down as one of Wilson Valdez’s most embarrassing moments, what I would have given to be in the locker room after this game to hear what the Reds manager Dusty Baker had to say to Wilson Valdez. The Reds pitching did an outstanding job keeping the game tied and it all came down to Wilson Valdez’s blunder giving the Astros a gift. Oh well, what can you do? It happens to the best of them….
The Reds have a large enough lead over the Cards one game isn’t going to hurt them. With a 8-1/2 game lead they can afford a lousy mistake like the one Wilson Valdez made in the game.
