While practicing in the San Francisco Bay, the catamaran capsized on a training exercise. Andrew “Bart” Simpson was trapped underneath the boat and it took a while to remove him from the water. The 2 time gold medal winner died minutes later at an area hospital.

Mr Simpson represented Great Britain at two Olympic Games, sailing in the Star class alongside Iain Percy, his Artemis team boss. Artemis Racing said: “It is with immense sadness that Artemis Racing confirms the tragic death of crew-member Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson today in San Francisco.”

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mr Simpson’s wife and family. It is indeed a sad day in the world of America’s Cup yacht racing. The world lost a great competitor today.
